History of the Velveteen Lop
PAST COD HOLDERS
In 1990 Virginia Menden, of California, thought to develop a unique rabbit with Rex-like fur and a mandolin-shaped body type derived from the English Lop. This rabbit would ideally have lop ears and range at 4.8lbs in Virginia's COD (Certificate of Development) standard. Unfortunately, Virginia never presented under her COD.
The next COD holder was Pawl Lewis, of New Mexico. Like Virginia, his developing rabbits were never presented.
After Pawl, Mary Crawford, of Texas stepped up as the COD holder. She completely rewrote the entire standard for the Velveteen Lop. Mary increased the weight, and ear length, all while striving to be sure the perfect personalities prevailed in the developing rabbits. Mary had quite a few successful passing's alone, then she had several successful passing's with David Kabella of Texas. Between David and Mary, it seemed a passing would come for sure on the breed. Unfortunately, the breed was never passed. The American Rabbit Breeders Committee never gave more than two passing's, therefore never receiving the third and final pass needed to become recognized.
Lorrie Stillo was then handed the COD torch. She had two successful passings, but again, like Mary, never receiving the third and final pass.
CURRENT COD HOLDERS
The current COD holder of the Velveteen Lop is Megan Matthys of Indiana. Megan was fully set to present in 2017, but due to a paperwork issue, was unable to. The 2018 ARBA Convention will be Megan's first presentation, and we are all hoping it is a successful pass for the holder and the breed. Her father currently holds the backup COD as well. Be sure to stay tuned to this years convention results in October! #TeamVelveteen
